Job description

Black Forest Games are on the lookout for a Senior Engine Programmer to sink their teeth into all sub-system, and help them transition form EU4 to UE5 in order to deliver top end games for next gen consoles.

Founded a decade ago and part of THQ Nordic, Black Forest Games specialise in 3rd person action games for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, such as their latest title, “Destroy All Humans! 2”. They are located in the town of Offenburg, one of the most beautiful areas of southern Germany, which is also just a single train trips journey from Strasbourg, France.

This is an amazing opportunity to join a team who have a “No crunch” policy and firmly believe that when you hire, you “hire for studio, not for project”. They provide extensive relocation support including visa sponsorship, financial support, your first month’s accommodation and even German and French lessons if you want. With a diverse team made up of 19 different nationalities, you can be assured that no matter where you are from, you will feel at home there.

Working with the Unreal engine 4 and 5, you will get to sink your teeth into every aspect of engine development and delve into optimisation and improvements on all platforms (PC/XSX/PS5). You will also get to manage the relationship between the most current hardware and software providers and engage with the largest technology providers through networking and conferences.

Your role and responsibilities will include...

  • Working with low-level engine technology (rendering, streaming, audio, physics, animation)
  • Taking the engine forward into the next console generation and upcoming handled devices
  • Providing and maintaining modifications to the Unreal Engine
  • Further optimisation of the technology for high performance and memory efficiency
  • Developing cutting edge eye-candy rendering features
  • Researching new technology over a wide field of disciplines

The skills and experience you'll need...

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional development within the games industry
  • Comprehensive understanding of 3D rendering pipelines and lighting systems (forward & deferred rendering shading experience)
  • Working knowledge of assembly languages (Intel, SIMD: SSE, MMX), GPU shading languages (HLSL, Cg, GLSL), and general-purpose computing on GPUs (CUDA, OpenCL)
  • An extensive background in optimisation
  • A passion for mathematics and complex algorithms
  • Fluency in English
