Job description

Aardvark Swift is working with Variable State, supporting their search for an Environment Artist.

Variable State are a game development studio formed in 2014 who focus on interactive storytelling and game narrative, telling surprising stories about intriguing characters. They operate as a virtual studio with members working remotely from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Your responsibilities…
  • Collaborating with the art director and other art leads to help define the look and layout of the environments, vehicles, and props
  • Working from concept art and capturing the essence of designs as well as adding finer detail in keeping with the concept piece
  • Creating rich organic environments as well as complex architectural structures and props
  • Modelling guns, props, and vehicles in a sci-fi style
  • Iterating based on feedback

Essential requirements...
  • One or more shipped game or relevant industry experience
  • Solid knowledge of Maya, ZBrush, Substance, Photoshop, and other equivalent software, plus a keenness to learn more
  • A working knowledge of Unreal 4 and the art pipeline from initial concept to game ready asset
  • Comfortable working collaboratively and embracing change
  • Fluent in English

Desirable extras...
  • Familiar with level design, especially within Unreal 4
  • An understanding of film and visual storytelling
  • An interest and a vocabulary in visual art beyond video games e.g. contemporary art, design, and fashion
  • Experience and knowledge of other traditional arts such as painting, sculpting, figure drawing, and illustration
  • An interest and knowledge of other aspects of video game development

Please prepare a portfolio of work demonstrating a solid grasp of 3D modelling and design and complete game ready models.
