Job description

Splash Damage is working on an exciting new project and is seeking a Lead Character Artist to join the leadership team responsible for defining the appearance of heroes and villains.

As Lead Character Artist, you will collaborate closely with the Art Director and Creative Director, taking charge of creating, establishing, and maintaining high-quality characters for the project.

You’ll make use of your mentoring skills and lead by example, passing on your knowledge and expertise in anatomy, sculpting, texturing, and overall artistic abilities.

Your key responsibilities…
  • Lead, motivate, and inspire a team of creative artists, ensuring quality, efficiency, and consistency through feedback and mentoring
  • Drive visual quality in collaboration with other Lead Artists
  • Collaborate with Art and Design Directors to create technically sound, engaging, and memorable characters
The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role…
  • Experienced in managing a Character Art team, including one-on-ones, objective setting, team well-being, and mentoring
  • Highly experienced and proficient with 3D Studio MAX or Maya, Zbrush, and Photoshop
  • Exceptional 3D modelling and texturing skills for organics and hard-surface assets
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, proportions, mechanics, characterizations, and archetypes
  • Familiarity with mechanical construction and functionality (gear, weapons, and robotics)
  • Experience with character pipelines and efficient memory management of UVs, textures, and vertices
  • Experience with multiple texturing workflows for current (PBR) and previous generations, capable of creating well-defined and readable realistic materials
  • Understanding of character modelling, rigging, and skinning for animation preparation
  • Proactive in driving efficiency in work methods and maintaining high standards
  • Collaborative and team focused approach with excellent communication and problem-solving skills

  • Experience developing character models and textures in various styles
  • Credits as a Character Artist on shipped titles
  • Knowledge of real-time shaders
  • Strong foundation in traditional art, including sculpture, conceptual design, and illustration, including lighting or colour keys
  • Passion for games and game design beyond art
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 4
  • Familiarity with Substance Painter and Marvelous Designer
