Job description

Romero Games are looking for a Senior Technical Artist to join their ranks as they develop a new AAA FPS title in Unreal Engine 5 and in partnership with a major publisher.

As a Senior Technical Artist at Romero Games, you’ll handle game asset pipelines and optimisation as you bridge the gap between art and code. Leveraging your understanding of real-time graphics, modelling, animation, and VFX, to assist with the production and integration of art assets of the highest quality.

The team at Romero boasts an unprecedented level of FPS expertise with many of the dev team having worked together for over 10 years and in some cases as long as 20! Collectively the team have shipped over 200 titles and won many accolades along the way, forming a wealth of FPS knowledge from past projects, with all the lessons learnt along the way being poured into this new IP.

Your responsibilities…
  • Communicating and coordinating with the Art, Programming, and Design teams
  • Setting up workflows and pipelines for art production
  • Supporting artists and engineers in the 3D art pipeline
  • Assisting in asset optimisation and validation
  • Solving complex technical art production issues during development
  • Enforcing standards as outlined by heads of departments
  • Monitoring the performance of the game
  • Maintaining technical documentation
The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role…
  • 5 or more years’ experience in a Technical Art role in the games industry
  • Deep knowledge of art and animation pipelines, including the use of tools such as Maya, 3DS Max, and Substance
  • Expert understanding of optimisation techniques and the technical requirements of game content such as draw calls, polycounts, shader complexity, and memory usage
  • Experience developing art-driven solutions for visual gameplay features, including destruction simulation, and procedural VFX
  • Solid understanding of the real-time rendering, post-processing pipelines, and the techniques for optimising runtime performance
  • Experience mentoring and leading other artists to produce their best work in a supportive environment
  • High attention to detail and communication skills
  • Familiarity with game systems and the game development process
  • High level artistic skills with proportion, colour, and composition
  • Creative mindset and ability to overcome technical challenges
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with differences between creative and technical teams
It's a bonus if you have…
  • Strong portfolio, or demo reel
  • Experience with Unreal Engine, including understanding or experience with Nanite & Lumen
  • Experience with procedural workflows and tools such as Houdini
  • Experience working on a First Person Shooter
  • Understanding of rigging and animation, with shader and material development experience
  • Experience with programming and/or scripting languages used to create the scripts/tools necessary for accelerating and optimising art production workflows

This position is open to remote work, and relocation to the studio in Galway, Ireland is also possibility.
